This picture of four fine figures of men (well, us anyway) was taken last Saturday night at Dover harbour. We went for a night swim, we're not sure what time we'll be starting and it is more than likely some of us will have to swim in the dark, which can be very disconcerting, so it's good practice to go for a swim in 'safe' waters, with friends, so as to 'get your head around it' in advance of the real thing. The problems are all in the mind, it's the thought of being unable to see anything and your hand just disappearing into blackness with all the 'things' that could be lurking under the surface that cause the anxiety.
I was a little worried about it at first but was actually OK in the end, the worst thing was that my goggles misted up and all the lights in the distance just melded into one so I had no idea whatsoever where I was and in what direction I was swimming. I'd stop, put my head up and realise I was heading back where I'd come from - I must learn to swim in a straight line!!
